So then, we have to realize that there is only one way to be cleansed of our sin, and that is through Christ crucified, accepting Him as the Lord of our life. But when we realize our sinful ways and trust God in full submission, He will do a miracle in the heart. Submission doesn’t come easily for us prideful human beings. Psalm 51 is his earnest prayer for God to “create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. In David’s story in 2 Samuel 12, David had sinned greatly, but was oblivious to his own sin, until, when the prophet, Nathan, told him a story, an allegory, David was struck with the realization of the seriousness of what he had done. Our part is humbling ourselves, recognizing how un-pure our hearts are, and opening our hearts to allow Jesus to work in us, to forgive us and change our wills to match up with the will of God. Since we can’t purify our own hearts or take away our own sin, how can we get our hearts clean? He offers us a brand new pure heart, and the gives us the Holy Spirit inside to help us keep our hearts clean. Sadly, there was not one mention of God or the part He has in purifying our hearts in that article.Įzekial tells us that it is actually God who is able to give us a clean heart. The list included speaking wisely, being humble and kind and loving, among quite a few others. I recently read an article that gave a list of ways to obtain a pure heart. None of us can have a pure heart just by being a nice or a good person. This is our human nature, our inclination toward sinning. Our hearts are naturally drawn away from the things of God. If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.
